Enroxil for dogs

Enroxil is an antibacterial drug used for dogs for pathologies caused by bacteria. The drug is produced by the famous Slovenian company KRKA in several versions. They differ among themselves not only in the dosage form, but also in the concentration of the active substance. Thanks to this, it is not difficult to choose a medication option for representatives of small and large breeds.

General description

Enroxil is available in the following forms:

  • pills;
  • injection solution;
  • powder;
  • solution for internal use.

It is worth noting that for dogs, only Enroxil is used in tablets and injections, so we will consider them in more detail. Other dosage forms are used to treat poultry, pigs and other farm animals. The active substance in all forms of the drug is enrofloxacin.

Tablets are made in three versions. One tablet may contain 15, 50 and 150 mg of active substance. When buying a medicine, you need to pay attention to the concentration of the active ingredient.

Externally, slightly convex tablets are round in shape. On one side is a groove for division. They are packed in blisters of 10 pieces. In addition to enrofloxacin, they also contain such components:

  • magnesium stearate;
  • corn starch;
  • sodium lauryl sulfate;
  • methacrylic acid copolymer;
  • meat flavoring, etc.

Injection is a clear liquid with a slightly yellowish tint. The concentration of the active substance may be 50 or 100 mg per 1 ml of the drug. Pack it in glass bottles with a capacity of 50 or 100 ml. The solution contains butanol, purified water and potassium hydroxide.

Since the bottles are large, for convenience they are closed with rubber stoppers. When using the drug, there is no need to fully open the package, because you can dial the solution with a syringe through a puncture in the cork. Using this method, it is possible to maintain the tightness and sterility of the medicinal fluid for a long time. The only condition is that you need to use sterile syringes and needles to take the medication. Disposable syringes are best suited for these purposes.

How does it work

Enroxil has a pronounced antibacterial effect, which applies to gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. It destroys the following bacteria:

  • streptococci;
  • staphylococci;
  • mycoplasma;
  • salmonella;
  • Proteus
  • listeria and others

A feature of the action of the drug is that the active substance causes pathological changes in the DNA of bacteria. As a result of such an action, they stop reproducing and die.

The antibiotic begins to act quickly. If the animal is given pills, then the concentration of enrofloxacin reaches its maximum value in 1.5-2 hours. If an injection is used, then the antibiotic begins to act even faster. Regardless of the dosage form, the effect of the antibiotic persists for 24 hours. Together with the bloodstream, it spreads throughout the body, therefore it is successfully used to treat inflammation of various pathologies.

When applied

The instructions for use describe in detail when Enroxil for dogs is used. Assign it to treat the following pathologies:

  • pneumonia;
  • salmonellosis;
  • streptococcosis;
  • bacterial inflammation of the digestive system;
  • infectious pathologies of the respiratory system;
  • atrophic rhinitis;
  • colibaceriosis;
  • diseases of the urinary system of bacterial origin.

The drug is used only under the condition that the development of the pathology is caused by bacteria that are sensitive to the antibiotics of the fluoroquinolone group. In this regard, it is not used for self-medication, but is prescribed only after a complete clinical examination.

How to apply

Usually, Enroxil tablets are used for dogs. The daily dose is calculated depending on the weight. For every kilogram of weight, 5 mg of active substance is needed. For example, a tablet with 15 mg of enrofloxacin is designed for 3 kg of weight.

Although the composition of the drug includes a meat flavoring, many animals refuse to voluntarily eat pills. In such cases, the owners often resort to tricks and mix the medicine with food. Pre pills should be crushed. If this "number" does not roll, then the medicine will have to be forced to put on the root of the tongue.

Usually, the medicine is given once a day, but the daily dose is allowed to be divided into two doses. The duration of treatment should be at least 5 days. Do not stop antibiotic treatment after 1-2 days if the symptoms of the disease have disappeared. In this case, the bacteria can survive, but at the same time they will develop resistance to the action of the drug.

Note! The course of treatment with an antibiotic can be increased to 10 days, but only by a veterinarian.

If injections are used, the dosage of Enroxil for dogs according to the instructions is calculated according to a similar scheme - 5 mg of active substance per 1 kg of weight. If a 5% solution is used, 0.1 ml of the drug should be taken per 1 kg of weight.

Note! For dogs, a 10% solution is rarely used because of the difficulty in calculating the exact dose.

Injections are done subcutaneously. At high doses, it is recommended to administer the medicine in several places, since the injections are rather painful. The course is usually 5 days, with severe pathologies, the duration of treatment is increased to 10 days.

In antibiotic treatment, medications for symptomatic therapy can also be used. Select a comprehensive treatment should be a veterinarian.

What are the limitations?

Enroxil refers to effective antibacterial agents that are used for various pathologies, but it also has a number of contraindications. To abandon its use is in the following cases:

  • with severe liver diseases (cirrhosis, liver failure, hepatitis, etc.);
  • with pathologies of the kidneys, proceeding in a severe form;
  • with intolerance to the active substance;
  • with lesions of the nervous system;
  • with convulsions;
  • with diseases of cartilage and developmental disorders.

It is not recommended to use an antibiotic for puppies up to one year of age, and for representatives of large breeds - up to 18 weeks, as problems with the formation of cartilage and bone tissue may occur. During pregnancy and lactation, it is also not recommended to use Enroxil. Although the doctor should assess the risks to the offspring and the female.

Note! It is strictly impossible to combine the use of Enroxil with other antibiotics, in particular with tetracyclines, macrolides, as well as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It is advisable not to combine tablets with medicines that contain cations of aluminum, iron, magnesium and calcium, since they impair the absorption of the active substance in the digestive system.

Side effects

Typically, the drug is well tolerated by animals. Sometimes there is frequent defecation and softening of feces. A similar phenomenon passes on its own and does not require discontinuation of the drug. Minor vomiting is also not a reason for discontinuing the antibiotic.

With intolerance, allergic reactions can occur. In this case, it is better to choose another antibacterial agent. If necessary, the animal is prescribed symptomatic therapy and is necessarily given an antiallergenic agent.

Owner reviews

Anna, the owner of the pug:

"Our dog was prescribed Enroxil for problems with the genitourinary system. We did not succeed in evaluating the effectiveness of the drug because severe diarrhea began. Symptomatic treatment did not give results until the antibiotic was stopped. After that, they asked the veterinarian to choose another treatment."

Lida, owner of the toy terrier:

"There was severe inflammation of the lymph nodes. At first, Baytril was pricked. There were no results. Another doctor prescribed Enroxil. The animal had a high fever and started terrible diarrhea. The drug was canceled, but it took another 10 days to normalize the stool. I do not recommend anyone for treatment."

Veterinarian reviews

Mikhail, a veterinarian with 7 years of experience:

"Although Enroxil is produced by a well-known company, it is impossible to list it with the best antibiotics. Very often it causes diarrhea and vomiting. I do not use it in my practice. There are safer antibiotics among veterinary medicines."

Olga, a veterinarian with 12 years of experience:

"Like any antibiotic, Enroxil can cause digestive problems. This is due to the fact that antibacterial agents destroy not only pathogenic microorganisms, but also the beneficial intestinal microflora. Usually, I additionally prescribe medications to maintain the intestines. In terms of effectiveness, the medicine is good. Besides has a wide spectrum of action. "
